The value of uncertainty

Silvia Demozzi, Nicoletta Chieregato

The current pandemic emergency brings the theme of human vulnerability on the proscenium and reveals the uncertainty associated to existences, as well as the impossibility of having control of all variables interacting in a complex system. It appears as symptom of a deeper crisis, exceeding the health one: the crisis of modern society epistemological and socio-economic paradigms, which need to be radically questioned and changed. Then why not thinking of this crisis as an opportunity? This paper deepens the possibility of looking at change as (re)birth chance, thanks to subjects choosing to be the protagonists of new narratives. The qualitative research Education in the time of Coronavirus (and after) fits this theoretical frame. The study, carried out by CREIF, aimed at investigating the emotions experienced and the responses developed by the education professionals during the first phase of the emergency. It explored the areas related to the meaning and motivation attributed to one’s educational action, the fears that emerged, the ideas prompted by the change, with a particular focus on the structural conditions able to foster «creative solutions». The enhancement of teamwork — able to feed reflexive processes — and the presence of support and training programmes appear to be crucial elements.
