Ethics, education and democracy in Dewey

Teodora Pezzano

In this paper the author attempts to analyse the relationship between ethics, education and democracy in certain focal meanings of John Dewey’s educational thought. Analysing the early work The Ethics of Democracy from 1888 up to Democracy and Education from 1916 — in particular concerning criticism of Rousseau — and some aspects of Human Nature and Conduct from 1922, the author highlights how education is organically linked to the concept of democracy as a «way of life», as a habit which develops in social life.
