The role of formative assessment in primary school

Federico Batini, Guerra Martina

TThis study examines the role of formative assessment in the school environment and in particular focuses on the effects of the latter on learning in primary school. The goal is to examine, in this specific age group, the influence of formative assessment on pupils’ learning. The theme was chosen for the specific relevance and importance of the evaluation phase in the teaching and learning process. The purpose of the article is to demonstrate, through a systematic review, that the use of formative assessment has direct consequences on the learning of pupils. In addition, we will try to clarify which formative assessment methods and which types of feedback management have a more significant influence on learning. The review examined the articles published in open access on two search engines: ERIC (Educational Resources Information Center) and SCOPUS. The research was carried out without time limits but restricting the population to primary school pupils. The results confirm the positive effects of formative assessment on pupils’ learning.
