Science and poetry: Popular science literature for children and adolescents between the 1950s and 1960s

Tiziana Mascia

This study delves into the influence of popular science literature for children and adolescents in Italy during the 1950s and 1960s, a period characterised by significant cultural and technological transformations. It highlights the contributions of «Schedario», a leading journal in Italy’s children’s literature scene, and its director, Enzo Petrini. Through historical-critical analysis, this research uncovers the debates that influenced the development of popular science literature for young people, leading to innovative publishing paradigms. In this context, science escapes traditional educational boundaries, adopting more accessible and engaging approaches. The findings enrich our understanding of the period’s cultural and educational dynamics, providing valuable perspectives on the significance of popularizing science among children and adolescents within today’s educational framework.
