The Origins of the Pedagogical Philosophy of John Dewey
Teodora Pezzano
In this paper, the author draws attention to one of Dewey’s early essays, which represented for a certain historical period the specific educational manifesto of his pedagogy: My Pedagogic Creed, from 1897. This essay is not only an expression of John Dewey’s educational choice, but also a revolutionary essay because it revised ethical criteria and educational rules in order to strengthen moral conduct. For this reason, the author deals with this issue by going back to a paper that came before My Pedagogic Creed, namely Ethical Principles Underlying Education, from 1897. In this perspective, she analyses the genesis of this work, as an expression of Deweyan educational choice.
