Sport, competition, and educational dimension: A psycho-pedagogical reading between Transactional Analysis and Logotherapy

Alfredo Altomonte, Francesco Sartori

Sport represents a context for training and education, fostering both physical and psychological well-being within a holistic vision of the individual. From the perspective of Salesian pedagogy, it supports growth both within and beyond sport, contributing to the development of the individual as both a person and an athlete. Berne’s Transactional Analysis and Frankl’s Logotherapy provide valuable tools for understanding the individual’s internal dynamics in relation to the sporting context. These approaches can foster more functional communication and improved emotional self-regulation, in line with the individual’s search for meaning. Establishing an ethical educational dimension, beginning with a meaningful relationship with the coach or sports educator, is therefore central to designing an educational project in the field of sport: one that promotes physical training while also supporting inner freedom of choice.
