Assessing teaching quality at school. Students’ voices

Katia Montalbetti

Planning, implementing and documenting teaching assessment practices for schools is a challenge at many levels: relational, organizational, methodological. The paper critically analyzes a training experience carried on in a secondary school; in this context a research action has been done aimed to investigate the experience lived by the students and to highlight its value for their development path. For this purpose, a semi-structured questionnaire was built and administered to the whole school student population (N 1.156). From the data emerges a responsible and autonomous style which stimulates students’ mobilization of transversal skills essential for the exercise of an active citizenship. However, there were also critical findings related in particular to the forms of communication and the use of the data collected in the field. Overall, it’s necessary to shift the focus of assessing teaching from the judgment about the teacher’s skill to the responsible and shared commitment of all the actors supported by a fully improving perspective.
