Theater at school: Yesterday, today, between ancient and new educational possibilities

The Legislative Decree of 13 April 2017, n. 60 is one of the decrees implementing the Law of 13 July 2015, n. 107, known as the «Good School». It concerns the norms for the promotion of a humanistic culture and intends to promote a basic artistic training that allows the creative development of everyone. This ought to include the practice and culture of music, arts, entertainment and visual arts, both in traditional and innovative ways, while at the same time promoting historical-critical knowledge of the Italian cultural heritage and Made in Italy. The legislative decree identifies the themes of creativity, in artistic subjects «through curricular paths, also vertically, in alternating school-work, and through the programming in network with other schools and / or other public and private subjects, including the subjects of the third sector operating in the artistic and musical field» (MIUR, 7 April 2017, p. 27). And it cites as specific areas the musical-choral, the artistic-visual and linguistic-creative and, precisely, the theatrical-performance type. In front of this indication of learning and educational value of the theatre, the article intends to deepen this peculiar relationship historically between school and theatre, recalling a long tradition, and presenting developments, showing trends and educational possibilities.
