Addressing university dropout is a critical challenge in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals outlined in the 2030 Agenda. This study investigates both individual and contextual factors influencing students’ reconsideration of their academic pathway, drawing on the sustainable career framework. The participants are 658 students from the University of Bologna who took part in the study by completing a questionnaire assessing personal resources and perceptions of the university environment. Hierarchical regression analysis revealed that not only personal resources but also students’ perceptions of the academic context significantly contribute to their reconsideration of course choice. The innovative contribution of this study lies in highlighting the role of the university environment in shaping students’ professional identity. The findings are discussed within the framework of career sustainability, emphasizing the importance of ongoing guidance interventions and effective preventive strategies to foster academic success and the development of sustainable university careers.
