The transition from lower secondary school to upper secondary school represents the first vocational choice for young people and is an important developmental task. This research is aimed at investigating the influence of socio-cognitive variables in career planning. 844 pupils took part in the research, 49.2% of participants were male, with an average age of 13 years, who were attending their second year of lower secondary school in Emilia-Romagna. Data were collected over the course of a guidance programme called «almamedie», during the academic years ٢٠١٨/٢٠١٩ and ٢٠١٩/٢٠٢٠. Results confirm the role of psychological capital, and the instrumentality of education and parental support in career planning. Practical implications and limits are discussed.
