School dropout is a complex multidimensional phenomenon that directly involves teachers, who have to find daily solutions to deal with uncomfortable situations related, for example, topoor motivation, poor profit, ecc. Therefore, it was decided to explore this theme starting from their opinion and limiting the field of investigation to the motivation to learn, a modifiable feature teachers can work in advance with. To explore this concept, a specific section was built within a large-scale questionnaire aimed at teachers. The starting point for the formulation of the questions was exploratory qualitative research, in which the indicators emerging from the evaluation brainstorming were used as a basis for discussion in small groups. The questions formulated were administered to the sample of the classes participating in the INVALSI National Surveys. In this contribution, along with the presentation of the methodology used for the formulation of questions, the preliminary results of this sample survey will be presented. The findings highlight the importance of understanding the uniqueness of each individual student, the need for teachers to deepen this issue and the fact that group and project work is the most appropriate methodological technique to stimulate the motivation to learn.
