Identifying ourselves nowadays: The relationship between identity and cyberspace

Grazia Perriello

Identifying ourselves nowadays has become more and more complicated not only on the basis of multiple values and cultural changes which have followed in the past decades, but also related to the increasing diffusion of virtual reality. While offering multiple opportunities, the virtual reality avoids those spatio-temporal boundaries which are the basis of each human being’s identity. This contribution aims to reflect, within a psychoanalytic perspective, on the relationship between identity and cyberspace, looking for some of the possible senses that the technological object assumes in the psychic world of contemporary human being. Our aim is to reflect on the possible ways to contain the risk that the human being may become an object among others objects.

Identity, cyberspace, virtual reality, solitude.
