«Sull’avvenire delle nostre scuole» – Cultura, educazione e società nelle conferenze basileesi di Friedrich Nietzsche

Paolo Scolari

1872, Basel. In conjunction with the publication of The Birth of Tragedy, Nietzsche, who was not 28 yet at that time, appears on the public scene and delivers a cycle of 5 lectures in the Swiss town. These lectures will be published after his death with the title On the Future of our Educational Institutions. As we are used to the common idea that Nietzsche is the prophet of the death of God and the overman, the promoter of nihilism and will to power, and maybe the inspirer of Nazi Fascism, too, it can sound strange to us that one of the themes he was more fond of throughout his whole life was instead the theme of culture and education. From his position of University professor and High School teacher, the young Nietzsche observes and criticizes the cultural and educational environment he can see every day, and, after more than a century, he provides us with valid causes for reflection on our culture and on the society deriving from it.
