School for All. Democratic education and equity in the Constitution and in reforms between the Fifties and the Seventies

Valerio Ferrero

This essay analyses the universalist and democratic aspirations of our schools, focusing on the role assigned to it by the Constitution and the first twenty-five years of educational reforms. Unified middle schools and all-day primary schools were the two major innovations of that period, conceived from a perspective of equity and social justice in order to reduce social and local inequalities. A pedagogical analysis of the legislation and a look at research evidence is useful for understanding whether the various measures had the desired effects.
