Pietro Braido, FSE Dean, UPS Rector

Carlo Nanni

In Salesian circles the name of Peter Braido (1919-2014) is closely related to the reconstruction and actualization of the preventive system of Don Bosco. Outside pedagogical circles he is remembered as a noteworthy scholar of the history of pedagogy, philosophy of education and of pedagogical epistemology in the wake of the Aristotelian-Thomist tradition and of pedagogical personalism. Less studied, however, is his work as an institutional man. He has, in fact, left a deep and decisive mark in the history of the Faculty of the Sciences of Education, as Dean-President, a post he held four times in twenty years (1952-1973), and also as the first Rector (1974-1977), of the Salesian Pontifical University when it moved from being a simple Ateneo and to a University (1973). This contribution also highlights the great educational intentionality he had for the benefit of young people whose interest always accompanied him both in his work as a scholar and as an institutional man.
