The role of Specialized Assistance for students with Special Educational Needs (SEN) and Specific Learning Disorders (SLD): The experience of «IIS Donato Bramante»

Simona Brandini, Daniela Crestini

The paper aims to describe the intervention of Specialized Assistance for students with SLD, developed to support them in their processes of learning, inclusion, and self-improvement. This support program included 12 classes (from 1st to 5th class) of a secondary school in Rome and was conducted by four psychologists, specialized in SLD. These professionals, thanks to the collaboration of the teachers and according to the Regional Guidelines for specialized assistance, have represented a functional asset for students with SLD and their class. In conclusion, this intervention represented an innovative way of school handling of students with SLD; although the program efficacy was not quantitatively assessed, the feedback provided by teachers and families involved underlines the important role of the specialized assistants for SLD within their school.
