Peter B. Raabe’s Preventive/Proactive Element. A Key to Understanding the Educational Relationship also as a Philosophical Practice

Cristiano Ciferri

Peter B. Raabe’s Philosophical Counseling. Theory and Practice, first
«handbook», must indeed be considered a milestone in the literature
concerning philosophical counseling. In his most recent reflection,
Raabe reaffirms the «therapeutic» function of philosophy, where the
preventive/proactive element has a key role. To better understand
the peculiarity of this author’s position, we shall in this article try to
rediscover his original thought on the subject. We shall do this by
analysing his four-stage method, through a rereading of his doctoral
thesis Philosophy of Philosophical Counselling and that with due
reference also to the subsequent development of his thought. In
this way we shall try to repropose the value of the preventive/proactive
approach from the perspective of the educational relationship
considered also as a philosophical practice.
