Il ruolo del contesto nell’approccio sistemico e nell’ICF

Paola Baratella

The concept of context, a founding element of relational-systemic epistemology, is the innovation introduced by the ICF as an essential element in understanding and treating disabilities. Context is «what surrounds us» (etymologically speaking that which is «weaved together» and is «compresent»); in actual fact it is thus the environment and the situation in which an event is provoked or arises. The plot evolves and undergoes change according to the relationships and the connections that a person activates, without any awareness of the developments the story will be subject to. The subject is thus a «part of», participates and belongs to a context and creates his or her story/script on this basis. The ICF, in proposing a «systemic» interpretation of the conditions of health and/or sickness, through an interweaving of different planes, the physical aspect, the relational and participatory aspect and the environmental context, allows a complex and articulated vision to emerge of the person.
