People, in communicative interactions, use complex idiomatic expressions which relate to abstract concepts and mental states. The paper presents the results of a field investigation conducted with primary school students during the 2011-2012 school year through the help of Metalinguistic Understanding Evaluation Tests (PVCM), and aims to evaluate the level of metalinguistic competence and the mastering of idiomatic expressions in relation to age.
