This article deals with the professional development and the professionalisation of staff working in crèches and in
nursery schools. In actual fact, some of them have no training at all to work with children and most of them have
no specific training for handicapped children. Semi-guided interviews enabled us to find out what they learnt and
how they learnt (professional development). We also tried to identify the educational effect rules and guidelines
have and the role played by colleagues, parents and institutions in awarding recognition (professionalisation).
