Comunicare per vivere meglio

Ylenia Cognini, Riccardo Venturini

This article aims to explore the relationship established by the authors in the school environment with Daniel. The relationship has strengthened over time on the basis of theoretical research and specific daily practices and has enabled the child to achieve significant improvements in autonomy and communication skills. Daniel is a mentally retarded child who would like to be respected in terms of his individuality and to see his specific needs recognized, therefore, to communicate represents the most effective way to demonstrate he exists and to indicate the extent he can be independent with choices and decisions which concern the management of his time and his own needs. The case described in this article can have a paradigmatic value and provide valid lessons about the methods which even able bodied persons can adopt in everyday activities to react more effectively to different situations, to make themselves heard and learn to listen better to others, to converse and to recognize each other.
