The progressive increase in life expectancies for persons with an intellectual disability currently represents a crosssection
of studies which are innovative and in continuous expansion. This article highlights the need and urgency to define some common evaluation protocols of the multiple signs of deterioration associated with the ageing of persons with an intellectual disability by considering the numerous issues associated with the problem and their repercussions in various professional areas and sectors (healthcare, education, rehabilitation and social). Although considering health as an essential aspect for the purposes of this evaluation, there is also the need to examine other aspects equally essential and functional for an independent life and for a better adjustment to the environment, for example: cognitive functionality, social integration, emotional well-being and lifestyles.
