Il doppio confine dell’accessibilità nello sguardo filmico: dimensioni pedagogiche dell’esperienza immersiva e incarnata

The concept of accessibility, increasingly affecting also cultural, social and pedagogical dimensions as well as infrastructural and architectural ones, makes it possible to identify not only physical but also intangible and invisible barriers. As a cultural mediator, cinema, since its beginning, has worked on this boundary, turning its attention primarily to the outward, visual-behavioural representation of the person with disabilities. Instead, in some recent films, a shift in spectatorial perspective has begun to appear, capable of generating a projective instance within the perceptual and sensory sphere of the character with a condition of disability. From an embodied perspective, the external representation of the person with a disability is supplemented or replaced by the embodied and immersive experience of the disability itself. This paper aims to analyse the different ways through which, in the aforementioned films focused on visual and auditory disabilities, the sensory pattern of the disability is offered to viewers in a kind of perceptual translation, implemented through sound design and video editing. In this way, the perceptual-sensory sphere becomes a narrative agent in place of speech, ultimately allowing for a broadening of the pedagogical perspective and a reformulation of the very assumptions of barrier-generating thinking.
