Peer review between teachers as a tool for professional developement

Sofia Cramerotti

In this article we present some of the main characteristics and strengths of peer review, intended as a tool that
is both useful and fair in the development of teachers’ professional path. This approach is based on receiving
evaluation from experienced colleagues, within a professional community that shares goals and parameters
for observation, thus entailing improvement in learning-teaching processes. Peer observation is just one of the
aspects that defines peer review. Peer review has many merits in promoting quality and innovation in teaching,
because it promotes the creation of teaching communities that reflect on and share about their own teaching
practice. Therefore, peer review must lay its foundation on processes that guarantee the highest rigour, openness
and transparency, especially because it takes place in a collaborative and dialogical setting, that is not
hierarchical but that aims to construct a community of teachers, in which the well being and growth of every
participant is the ultimate goal.
