The nursery school as an inclusive educational service. Experiences from Piedmont

Daniela Bulgarelli

Italian legislation defines nursery schools as inclusive services, open to every child, respecting the individuality, culture and religion of the children and their families. The current paper presents some data collected in Piedmont (Italy), through the questionnaire «Children with disabilities in nursery schools». Ninety-three educators and two coordinators filled in the questionnaire, showing the value of the importance of creating inclusive contexts.
The integration of children with disabilities is pursued through the adaptation of spaces and organisational aspects, and fully-inclusive experiences, in which the children with disabilities participate in everyday life in the nursery as their peers do, are reported as well. Further steps towards inclusion can be made by organising activities to increase awareness of this issue, by making alliances with other social partners in the local area and by providing informative material about the initiatives made to promote inclusion.
