A peer mentor experience: Supporting students with developmental disabilities in a university programme

Bryan Dague, Emma Kutscher

This article will examine the role and impact of the peer mentor experience at Think College Vermont, a fully inclusive post-secondary education programme for students with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Undergraduate students provide academic, social and vocational support to students through a two-year certificate programme. Since the programme’s inception in 2010, over 100 undergraduate students have worked as peer mentors. In this article we explore why they apply to be mentors and what mentoring students has meant to them during their tenure. We will look at the impact this programme has on peer mentors as well as the impact on the college and university.
