The Expert Teacher Project

This article presents the Erickson Expert Teacher Project, a research project aimed at developing and enhancing teacher competences. In actual fact, the current school context means that teachers need ever more diversified skills, no longer those related only to teaching but also professional and organisational skills. Today’s teacher is required to be a professional capable of managing educational processes and developing appropriate learning environments. The first part of the article presents the Syllabus of competences created within the project and the various indicators describing it. Subsequently, the four expert teacher profiles are set out: Expert in innovative and inclusive teaching; Expert in lifelong professional devlopment; Expert in school organisation; Expert in educational guidance and work-related learning. Lastly, the results of the first experimental phase of the project are presented. This experiment had the main objective of raising teachers’ awareness of the use of an online self-evaluation tool regarding the competences outlined in the Syllabus, in addition to collecting qualitative data on the suitability of such a tool according to certain well-defined parameters.
