The professional achievement of disabled people: The essential role of schools and education in preventing differences from becoming disparities

Rosimeire Maria Orlando, Marily Oliveira Barbosa

This study focuses on the role of education in the professional achievement of adults with disabilities. Three university professors with disabilities were interviewed, with the aim of understanding who helped them and of establishing the challenges faced by these adults during their education, from school to university studies. The analysis shows that the experiences gained during their education and, above all, the collaboration between family and school contributed to overcoming barriers often encountered due to a lack of preparation in the school community and in society in their relationships with people with disabilities.
