Does school inclusion still require special didactics?

Lucio Cottini

The question posed in the title aims to encourage practical reflection on the role and purpose of special didactics in the new perspective of inclusive teaching. In other words, should we concentrate solely on identifying effective solutions, in educational terms, to special educational needs, in particular those of pupils with disabilities, or, should we widen our focus to the definition of programmes which create inclusive environments for all?
The fact that special needs are not only the needs of different pupils, in contraposition to those of typical pupils, leads us to emphasise the role of special inclusive didactics, which directs its aims to the study of inclusive teaching, centred on a perspective of context and on the creation of learning environments which are truly capable of including all pupils.
