Research on school inclusion of children with Autism Spectrum Disorders in ordinary schools, with specific reference to the situation in France

Jean-Louis Adrien, Catherine Barthélémy

The research presented in this article describes the realisation of specific school inclusion strategies and focuses mainly on the French context. Both the influences of these strategies on children with Autism Spectrum Disorders and their families, and their repercussions on teachers are examined. The paper will also highlight how early schooling of autistic children in ordinary schools and contact with peers have a considerable positive influence on every area of their development. Evaluation of the outcome of schooling on the development and cognitive functioning of pupils with autism provides prospects for further research in this field.
