Work orientation and intellectual disability: The educational responsibility of the school establishment

The procedures of employment of people with intellectual disabilities have been experimented with in Italy for several years since the approval of Act No. 68/1999, which entrusts Social Services with the planning and guidance of people with the above-mentioned disabilities into the world of work. Data analysis, on the results of the latest research on the job placement of people with intellectual disabilities, can offer a starting point for the planning of work orientation programmes for students with intellectual disabilities. Today, the opportunity is provided with alternating school-work training courses for upper secondary school students.
The article produces guidance for the identification of the educational aims of a work orientation project conceived for students with intellectual disabilities, along with some suggestions for teaching, which could be particularly useful for Special Education Teachers in upper secondary school.
