Urgencies questioning the history of special education

Alessandro Farinelli

The history of special education appears patchy, a legacy of the marginalisation which for centuries confined the disabled to the boundaries of history and historiography. In order to attempt to break the silence of this multitude of invisibles, all we can do is trust in the experiences and accounts of those — teachers, educators, doctors and priests — whose paths have crossed with theirs, trying to gather all the threads needed to weave the narrative of a history which otherwise would be destined to sink into oblivion. The following article suggests several paths which can be taken in order to illuminate a still unredeemed past, honouring the memory of those who have been denied the chance to leave any independent traces of their lives.
