Audio describing Il Lato positivo and Marianna Ucrìa: Between theory and practice

Vincenza Minutella

This article describes the complex decision making process involved in the audio description of the films Il Lato positivo and Marianna Ucrìa, which were screened during the season CinemAccessibile. The films were audio described by a group of students and ex students of the MA in Audiovisual Translation (University of Turin), together with the author of the article and a blind collaborator, the musician Luigi Mariani, using the software TellMeWhat. The main issues involved in audio describing the films will be explained, and the translation strategies adopted to overcome the challenges posed by the films will be illustrated. The paper will highlight the importance of team work and of creating the audio description with a blind person, who is not only the target audience of the final product, and a supervisor, but an active co-author of the audio description.
