Cinema, disability and Quality of Life

Marisa Pavone

Cinema has explored the world of disability on numerous occasions, bringing it to the general public and using it as a vehicle for overcoming prejudice and marginalising currents. The big screen gives people with disabilities direct access to cultural heritage, leading to the emancipation and promotion of their personal projects of independent life. Experimental «cinema without barriers», which since the eighties has been on the increase both abroad and here in our country, is undergoing interesting developments, with the aim of making film accessible to the sensory disabled with the ever more sophisticated technical aids of subtitling and audio description. The challenge for the future is to set up film production which, systematically, enhances the multisensory experience of the heterogeneous general public while at the same time ensuring that it can be enjoyed from a barrier free perspective.
