Organisational factors that determine the chance of getting a job for employees with intellectual disabilities

Emanuela Zappella

Work is a significant opportunity for the growth of people with intellectual disabilities but, despite regulations, they are the group of workers that face the greatest difficulties in finding and keeping a job. This literature review analyses articles published in the last twenty years in order to answer the following question: What are the organisational factors that facilitate employees with intellectual disabilities in getting a job? In order to answer this question, research was carried out on the most important articles published between 1995 and 2014 within the PubMed, PsycInfo, Embase and Web of Science databases. The research was analysed by two researchers who worked independently. The results show that factors influencing employment opportunities for employees with disabilities can be grouped into five categories: the identikit of the ideal candidate employers have in mind, job position and required performance, corporate culture and leadership style, job coach support, and the existence of external support.
