The role of the special needs teacher: What really works in an inclusive class?

Heidrun Demo

The article submits some results from multiple case studies of 13 inclusive classes in primary school. Fragments of texts falling under the category «a special needs teacher’s tasks», which have been selected from observations and focus groups with teachers, pupils and parents, are described. Specifically, the data illustrate the ways in which the special needs teachers in the sample contribute to class management, handle personalised activities and mediate when pupils with disabilities participate in class activities. The data is then discussed in relation to the current debate on the role and training of the special needs teacher.
