The debate on the profession of the special needs teacher is wide-ranging, is occasionally also radicalised and involves the entire world of schools, university training and family associationism. Both in the past and nowadays, heterogeneous positions can be discerned, which identify differing profiles and competences, based upon the accentuation of different meanings of the word «care»: medical, social and educational care. The various interpretive models of professionalism provide the basis for as many training models.
