L’inclusione: un progetto non ancora realizzato. Perché abbiamo bisogno dei Disability Studies in Education

Beth Ferri

The article provides a clear and concise discussion of the reasons why it is important to engage with Disability Studies, and more specifically with Disability Studies in Education, to develop inclusive education. After having briefly described what barriers have hindered the development of inclusion at a school level both in Italy and in the U.S., the author suggests that Italy should once more take the lead to realise inclusive education as it did with integration in the past. The author makes a case that this process requires an intellectual effort to shift from the special education paradigm, which still influences integration practices in Italy and inclusive practices in the U.S., to a disability studies in education paradigm.
