For a child that is learning to read, any word is basically composed of a letter string. In order to extract the meaning from this string the child has to apply serial analysis, which implies visual segmentation in graphemes. This analysis allows the child to match the correct sound to the specific symbol or group of symbols. A visual search task is not that different from the analysis of the text described above. For this reason, a visual search task, together with other visual attention measurements, make identifying children at risk of future reading disabilities possible during the pre-reading stage. Early training of these functions could be the perfect tool for reducing future reading difficulties.
