Handwriting: A «relic» of the past or an essential skill for the future?

Zuzanna Górska, Riccardo Venturini

The objective of this paper is to explore research on writing and on maintaining writing abilities at school in order to optimise and encourage learning in all subjects. Writing appears to be a skill which, in consolidation and in partnership with reading, encourages the connection of a network of neurons which, alongside a major investment in time, also encourages the development of information processing and association skills. Analysis of up-to-date research confirms an impoverishment in cognitive skills when supported by new technologies and by computer aids only, with no training in writing. Most importantly, a reduction in handwriting effort causes a drop in reading and calculation performance and in learning in general.
