The paper offers a reflection on the appropriateness of screening in the context of early diagnosis for Specific Learning Disorder (SLD). A word dictation test is proposed in the first term of primary year one as a predictor of serious SLD in transparent linguistic systems such as Italian. Standardised tests for early diagnosis are lacking and this paper offers a set of reading tests on the development of reading and writing in the first year of primary school.
