SLD, Barriers and Facilitators in the University of Calabria
Antonella Valenti
Law 170/2010 contributed to a rise in diagnoses of Specific Learning Disorders (SLD) in Italy, yet marked regional disparities remain, particularly in Southern areas. The University of Calabria launched an inclusion program for students with SLD, prompted by their initial absence in enrollment records. The initiative involved screening, staff training, specialized tutoring, and collaboration with the public health service. A survey identified didactic, cultural, and organizational barriers, as well as inclusive facilitators. Findings highlight the urgent need for enhanced teacher training and the implementation of Universal Design for Learning as a strategic approach to promote equity and academic success.
