A self-efficacy measurement scale in musical learning
Loredana Benedetto, Cettina Donato, Massimo Ingrassia, Maria Bucca
The authors present a domain-specific scale measuring self-efficacy beliefs in studying music. The scale (14 items) was designed for students (N = 273) frequenting instrumental classes in middle schools. Its psychometric properties resulted adequate for reliability (α = .89), test-retest stability (r = .82), convergent validity with measures of general academic self-efficacy and achievement in studying to play instrument. Scores of self-efficacy (high vs. low) differentiated significantly students on the basis of their interests and intention to continue musical studies. The scale can be useful for school counseling a) to support those students who require a refinement of study strategies and instrumental techniques, and b) to facilitate the choice for continuing musical studies at the end of middle school.
