Workplace Civility Scale: from the dark side to the positive side in organisations

Annamaria Di Fabio

Within a theoretical framework of organisational positive psychology, this contribution will move the focus from workplace incivility, traditionally studied in literature, innovating in terms of workplace civility. To detect the construct of workplace civility, the Workplace Civility Scale was developed as the first specific scale. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the psychometric properties of the Workplace Civility Scale. Participants were 367 physicians, nurses, guidance practitioners and public employees. Dimensionality, reliability, and concurrent validity were analysed. Confirmatory factor analysis supported a unidimensional version of the scale. In addition, good internal consistency and concurrent validity were established. Results indicate that the Workplace Civility Scale is a valid instrument for measuring workplace civility in the Italian context.
