Work-family conflict in nursing: The role of job demands, organisational equity, and a family-friendly climate

Lara Colombo, Margherita Zito, Federica Emanuel

Several studies highlight that work-family conflict (WFC) negatively influences the perception of well-being and job performance. The aim of this study is to observe which dimensions between job demands and dimensions related to equity and to organisational climate can help to understand WFC among nurses of a Hospital in North Italy (N = 197). Findings show the role of workload and of work shifts in determining WFC, whereas the dimension of equal work expectations decreases WFC. Balancing work and family represents an important management aim. It is therefore important to monitor workloads and to support employees, also through a culture which is based on equity and is therefore attentive to the needs of the individual.
