Hikikomori: Internalising cultural syndrome or voluntary withdrawal?
Yura Loscalzo, Cristian Nannicini, Marco Giannini
This paper aims to present the main features of Hikikomori, namely a psycho-social condition characterised by extreme social withdrawal, which is widespread among Japanese adolescents. After presenting its main characteristics and its risk factors, we will propose some future perspectives for studying Hikikomori in Italian adolescents. Specifically, we will refer to the need to create a test for its assessment, and to the possibility of analysing the relationship that Hikikomori could have with Social Anxiety Disorder, parents’ Workaholism (i.e. work addiction) and youths’ Studyholism.
