Question points, problems and contrasts over the meaning of counseling in Italy. Need for a Consensus Conference

This paper provides the reasons for a deeper reflection on counseling in Italy and encourages a shared orientation on its applications and development. Counseling problems have to be addressed taking into account the norms and regulations of the psychological professions. A continuum of the aims of counseling is described in order to emphasise the personal and social function of this activity. It highlights that psychologists are favoured for carrying out the function of counseling due more to their competences than to regulations and that it is not necessary to create new autonomous professionals. In any case psychology can also contribute to the development of non-psychological professions.
