Bidimensional Life Orientation Test-Revised (LOT-R)
Francesco Tommasi, Riccardo Sartori
The Life Orientation Test-Revised (LOT-R), the abbreviated form of the LOT, is the most commonly used instrument for the assessment of optimism. The common use of the instrument comes in parallel to the ongoing scientific debate on its psychometric structure, i.e. the one- or two-dimensional structure of the LOT-R. The present article is part of this debate and reports the results of a study on the psychometric properties of the instrument, i.e., construct validity and concurrent validity (correlations with the Self-Esteem Scale and the Satisfaction with Life Scale). The results of confirmatory factor analysis support the two-dimensional structure of the LOT-R. Furthermore, the single factors of optimism and pessimism show adequate levels of reliability and statistically significant correlations at concurrent validity analysis.
