The impact of nurse empowering leadership on professional team satisfaction

Luciano Ferrari, Chiara Panari, Elisa Manna

The aim of this work was to examine the impact of empowering leadership on satisfaction, both directly and indirectly, through the mediation of organizational commitment and prevention of burnout. The participants were 256 healthcare professionals working at two hospital organizations who completed an online questionnaire concerning empowering leadership (ELQ), organizational commitment (OC), and burnout (MBI). The results show a significant positive relationship between empowering leadership and satisfaction and, in particular, that the coaching dimension has a higher influence on wellbeing. In addition, affective and normative commitment and reduction of burnout play a mediating role between EL and satisfaction. It is necessary to reflect on the changes that have characterized the role of nursing leadership, which is increasingly focused on the development of human resources. Therefore, it could be useful to implement training courses that foster skills related to empowering behaviour strategies of nursing leaders.
