Using Neurofeedback in the Treatment of Behavioural Deficits in Minors with a Diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder

Giuseppe Maurizio Arduino, Danilo Dimitri, Giuliana Delia

The evaluation resulted in the inclusion of 24 articles (14 clinical trials and 10 reviews) which were ultimately included in the study. Three main aspects emerged from the review: (1) According to the existing literature, new randomized controlled trials are needed to ensure better understanding of the most effective NF treatments for patients diagnosed with ASD. There are currently different protocols that vary according to psychiatric comorbidities (ADHD, anxiety, etc.); (2) Regarding the use of NF, no differences were found between female and male samples regarding the recognition of emotions or cognitive aspects (Werneck-Rohrer, 2021); (3) NF treatments appear to be the most effective in treating ADHD symptoms; however, as a number of sessions (with an average of 31 sessions) are required for the training, it is not likely to be completed.
